Although you would not know it from LG Electronics or LG Mobile websites, David Blaine has signed on to promote the LG Shine mobile phone.
We received a press release and little else proclaiming the new relationship between "the world famous illusionist and endurance artist" and the Korean manufacturer. We like the title "endurance artist" and think it may be a good pseudonym for those poor folks forced to sit through our own show.
You will likely read about this event but you will probably only get a re-print of the press release. We go further here. We dive into the intricacies of the language within the press release.

Mr. Blaine will appear February 7th at the famous Cirque Theatre in London. Some of the older folks may remember this was once called The Hippodrome. Even older folks will recall that Houdini played there after it was redesigned from circus, water show, and wild animal venue; to a variety hall.
LG tells us Mr. Blaine will become the face of LG Shine and that the LG Shine is the "ultra stylish Black Label series" mobile phone.
There is one sentence in the press release we found curious. "David Blaine's visit will also mark the first time the magician will directly interact with British fans, as he mingles with guests demonstrating the very reason he was crowned the King of Cards." Perhaps something was lost in the translation from Korean to
English. We were unable to verify this is the wording LG intended
because there is no reference to Mr. Blaine at all on the UK or
European LG sites.
We were not aware of Mr. Blaine's titles including "The King of
Cards." We might buy off on the "Endurance Artist" and perhaps
"Illusionist" but we are having a tough time proclaiming Mr. Blaine to
be the King.
The press release takes the theme a bit further, though.
"In anticipation of his visit, David Blaine has become the subject
of unique images depicting a stylised modern day King of Cards. These
sensational photos are available on request."
We have included one of the sensational photos with this article. They are pretty neat.
The connection between the phone and David Blaine is apparently the "magic mirror" feature of the LG Shine.
Again, we turn to the press release for more information and awkward
verb use. "The LG Shine phone oozes sophistication with its super thin
brushed metal finish and "magic mirror" front that disappears when the
phone slides open." We checked out the use of "ooze" and "sophistication" in preparation
for this story. Prior to the late 1990s, the two words were almost
never together in the same sentence. The verb ooze was most often used
to describe a slow, thick flow of some substance. In the last two
years, the verb has been linked with sophistication (in a positive
sense), or sincerity (in a negative sense).
There is a great scholarly article by Elaine Gold from the University of Toronto about the inclusion of Yiddish
and Yiddish-like words in English if you care to follow-up on this
issue. She explores the interaction of "schm" and "ooze" to make a new
word.
What that has to do with magic, we don't know. Probably as much as
Mr. Blaine has to do with an oozing mobile phone and card tricks. - Provided by InsideMagic |
